BIOGRAPHICAL SCKETCH Dr. Vladimir Ávila Reese studied his degree and master’s degree at the State University of St. Petersburg, Russia (where he graduated with honors). He completed his doctorate at the Institute of Astronomy of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) for which he received the medal "Alfonso Caso." He completed a postdoctoral stay at the State University of New Mexico, USA. In 1999 he joined the IA-UNAM where he is currently a permanent Senior “B” Researcher and Head of the Department of Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology. His major scientific contributions have been on galaxies’ formation and evolution in the cosmological context, problems of matter and dark energy, apparent invisible components of the cosmos that constitute more than 95% of the matter-energy density of the universe today, as well as cosmological applications of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the most powerful explosions in the cosmos. Dr. Ávila Reese is an active teacher and trainer of human resources, and disseminates and popularizes science. He is member of SNI, the International Astronomical Union and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In 2006 he was named an honorary citizen of his native land Tarija, Bolivia. |
