El Observatorio Astronómico Nacional se transforma en 1967 en el Instituto de Astronomía (IA) de la UNAM y tiene entre sus objetivos principales impulsar la astrofísica a través de la realización de investigación original e innovadora con impacto internacional así como el diseño y construcción de instrumentación astronómica con tecnología de punta. Sus líneas de investigación se dividen en astrofísica estelar, del medio interestelar, teórica, galáctica, planetaria, extragaláctica, y cosmología.
