JOB DESCRIPTION

The Instituto de Astronomía of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IAUNAM) has four openings for research positions in Astrophysics, at faculty level from tenure track to senior track. Two of these positions are at IA-UNAM in Mexico City, while the other two are at IA-UNAM in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. One of the Ensenada positions requires researchers to be under 37 or 39 years of age, for men and woman respectively, by the starting date.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy or Physics, and have at least two years of postdoctoral experience. The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement. Faculty members are expected to carry out original research, collaborate with faculty members and must teach Astronomy and/or Physics courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, as well as mentor students. Women and minority group members are encouraged to apply.

Members of the Institute conduct research in most major Astronomical and Astrophysical fields. Candidates are encouraged to contact individual faculty members to explore potential collaborations and the scientific exploitation of IA-UNAM facilities.

Candidates must state in their application the IA-UNAM branch, Mexico City or Ensenada, that they want to be considered, arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Dr. J. Candidates must send a complete Curriculum Vitae, including a full list of publications, a statement of previous experience, research and teaching interests, and a statement of collaborative integration within the Institute by January 12th, 2020. The selected candidates are expected to occupy the position no later than August 2020.

Among the research facilities available for IA-UNAM researchers are:

  • Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM), Baja California, equipped with 0.84m, 1.5m and 2.1m telescopes equipped with optical and NIR instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy, and a series of international robotic facilities like RATIR, DDOTI, COATLI, BOOTES-5, SAINT-EX and TAOS-II.
  • The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT)
  • The High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) Observatory at Sierra Negra, Puebla,
  • The 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC)
  • Competitive access to the EVLA, the VLBA, and to ALMA, via collaboration with the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
  • UNAM is a funding partner of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey collaboration, and will continue participating as an institutional member during the SDSS-V Phase.
  • IA-UNAM has extensive computing facilities of its own and has access to general UNAM supercomputers.

 

The Institute provides funds for publishing, and limited support for observing and traveling; further funding is available by competing for national and/or UNAM grants.

SALARY.

Initial base salary will be fixed at the standard faculty level determined by UNAM. Faculty members are also eligible for several performance-related bonus programs. A copy of the successful applicant's birth certificate and Ph.D. diploma (or Ph.D. defense certificate) will be needed at a later date. The successful applicant will need to apply for a work permit if he/she does not have Mexican nationality.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Instituto de Astronomia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IA-UNAM) offers postdoctoral fellowships for one year, renewable for a second year depending on performance. Candidates interested in taking up a fellowship at the Instituto de Astronomía (IA) either in México City or Ensenada, Baja California, should apply directly to the IA. Applications should not be made to more than one Institute or Center at UNAM.

Fellows are expected to carry out original research in any area of astrophysics, collaborating with faculty and students. The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement. Fellows will have access to the San Pedro Mártir National Astronomical Observatory, Baja California facilities. Astronomers at Mexican institutions can compete for the mexican share of observing time on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC); they also have competitive access to the EVLA, the VLBA, and to ALMA, via collaboration with the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The IA is a member of the SLOAN-IV collaboration, the High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) Observatory and the Transneptunian Automated Occultation Survey-II (TAOS-II). The IA has extensive computing facilities on site including a purpose-built high-performance computing center, and access to other UNAM supercomputers.

The IA provides funds for publishing, and some support for observing and traveling.

Before applying, candidates should ensure that they meet the minimum requirements - any application not meeting these requirements is automatically rejected.

 

1. Have received their PhD no more than 5 years before the start date of the fellowship.

2. Have a minimum of one accepted or published article in a refereed journal.

The fellowship is tax free and includes health insurance (for self, spouse and children).

STIPENDS

The fellowship stipend is currently about 33,000 pesos per month, equivalent to 1,650 USD (the exchange rate is approximately 20.00 pesos/US Dollar).

SELECTION

The fellowships are assigned by a specialist University committee in the natural and physical sciences, and the IA will be assigned one or two postdocs each semester.
