Tenure Track Positions in Astrophysics

The Instituto de Astronomía of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IA-UNAM) has openings for two 

tenure track positions in the area of Extragalactic Astronomy and one tenure track position in the area of Stellar,

Interstellar Medium and Exoplanetary Astrophysics.

Applicants must mention to which area is he/she postulating.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in astronomy or physics, and have at least two years of
postdoctoral experience.

Applicants must be under 37 (men) or 39 (women) years of age, by the start date.

The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future
achievement. Faculty members are expected to carry out original research, collaborate with faculty
members and must teach astronomy and/or physics courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, as
well as mentor students.

Institute members have access to the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional in San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM),
Baja California. The Institute is a member of the High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) Observatory at
Sierra Negra, Puebla, and a partner in the Transneptunian Automated Occultation Survey-II (TAOS-II)
installed at OAN-SPM.

Astronomers at Mexican institutions can compete for the Mexican share of observing time on the 10.4-m
Gran Telescopio Canarias, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and also have competitive access to the EVLA,
the VLBA, and to ALMA, via collaboration with the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The Institute
is a funding partner of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey collaboration, which executes the SDSS-IV. In
addition the Institute has extensive computing facilities of its own, and members have access to general UNAM
supercomputers.

The Institute provides funds for publishing, and limited support for observing and traveling; further
funding is available by competing for national and/or UNAM grants.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Before applying, candidates should ensure that they meet the minimum requirements. Any application not
meeting these requirements is automatically rejected.
Candidates should submit a letter of application mentioning to which area is she/he postulating, a
curriculum vitae including a list of publications, a statement of previous experience and current and
future professional interests, and a description of research and teaching plans. The candidate should
arrange for at least three letters of recommendation. All paperwork (unsigned material) should be emailed

SALARY

Initial base salary will be fixed at the standard junior faculty level determined by UNAM. Faculty
members are also eligible for several performance-related bonus programs. Contracts are for a full 12

OTHER DOCUMENTS


A copy of the successful applicant's birth certificate and Ph.D. diploma (or Ph.D. defense certificate)
will be needed at a later date.

The successful applicant will need to apply for a work permit if he/she does not have Mexican
nationality.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) offers postdoctoral fellowships for one year, renewable for a second year depending on performance. Candidates interested in taking up a fellowship at the Instituto de Astronomía (IA) either in México City or Ensenada, Baja California, should apply directly to the IA. Applications should not be made to more than one Institute or Center at UNAM.

Fellows are expected to carry out original research in any area of Astrophysics, collaborating with faculty and/or students. The main selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement. Fellows will have access to the San Pedro Mártir National Astronomical Observatory, Baja California facilities. Astronomers at Mexican institutions can compete for the mexican share of observing time on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC); they also have competitive access to the EVLA, the VLBA, and to ALMA, via collaboration with the USA National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The IA is a member of the SLOAN-IV collaboration, the High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) Observatory, the Transneptunian Automated Occultation Survey-II (TAOS-II) and BOOTES network. The IA has extensive computing facilities on site including a purpose-built high-performance computing center, and access to other UNAM supercomputers.

The IA provides funds for publishing, and some support for observing and traveling.

There is no more any age limit for the candidates (NEW)

1. Have received their PhD no more than 5 years (NEW) before the start date of the fellowship.

2. Have a minimum of one accepted or published article in a refereed journal.

INCLUDED BENEFITS

The fellowship is tax free and includes health insurance (for self, spouse and children).

STIPENDS

The fellowship stipend is 14 UMA, currently about 32,000 pesos per month, equivalent to 1,700 USD (the exchange rate is approximately 19.00 pesos/US Dollar).

SELECTION

The fellowships are assigned by a specialist University committee in the natural and physical sciences, and the IA will be assigned one or two postdocs each semester.
